It's kinda scary how much this infamous 2008 quote from Obama describes the Tea Party movement:
Yeah, that's pretty much Tea Partiers in a nutshell. It covers just about the whole range of faux "issues" they pretend to have something about which to say.
I'm becoming more and more of the mindset that, rather than focusing on how dumb the Tea Party thing is, we ought to try and remember what the root causes are of this populist vomit-rage. In the quote from 2008, Obama was referring to towns in the Midwest suffering from staggering job losses. While cynical GOP strategists, religion, and Beckian journalism have plenty to do with the Tea Party movement, in many ways the root cause is frustration with the lack of economic opportunity. Ironically, one might even argue that the Tea Party phenomenon might never have emerged if more liberal policies had been adopted throughout the country...!
So what does this mean in practice? I'm not sure, but one thing it reminds me of is why it's not okay to let the Red States twist in the wind, hoisted by their own petard. It bothers me when people say things like, "Well, who would want to live in Alabama anyway? Fuck 'em." First of all, children growing up in Alabama don't have a choice. Other people may not have much of a practical choice due to job or family situations, etc. And this is just another reason: When any state neglects the welfare of their citizenry, it breeds the kind of populist outrage that fuels movements like the Tea Party -- and that influences politics on a national level.
If Alabama doesn't take care of their own people, then pissed-off Alabamians are going to march on the capital and demand that New York stop trying to look after their citizens too.
They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

It suddenly occurred to me today how Obama could end this entire "birther" controversy in one fell swoop: All he needs to do is obtain a video of himself being born, with sufficient background shots to establish the location as the Kapi'olani Medical Center in Honolulu, and then upload it to YouTube.
Some of you skeptics out there may argue that no such video exists, but since it's also true that Hawaii does not issue long form birth certificates, I don't see how this request is substantially different from the outcries of "SHOW US THE LONG FORM, OBAMA!"
So there it is. What have you got to hide, B. Hussein Soetoro? If you really are who you say you are, how come I can't Google for a picture of your head emerging from your mother's vagina, hmmm? SHOW US THE VAGINA, OBAMA!

I don't actually believe that Glenn Beck raped and murdered a young girl in 1990. I just don't understand why Beck doesn't provide conclusive proof that it didn't happen, so we can finally move past this as a nation.

Salon summarizes (and provides unedited audio of) an epic "interview" with birther extraordinaire Orly Taitz in which she recites a litany of insane charges, including:
- ...that Obama had numerous gay lovers in Trinity church whom he has bumped off
- ...that Google is part of a massive anti-Orly conspiracy
- ..that Obama has hundreds of social security numbers
Of course, in one so strong with the woo, it would be shocking if she didn't also share some of the trendy anti-vaccine paranoia. Of course.
Hundreds of servicemen are getting sick from mysterious vaccinations. Taitz wants some answers on why members of the military are required to receive certain vaccinations. "Did you know that there are hundreds of servicemen, that were vaccinated, and have reported serious, severe side effects of vaccination?" I ask her why there are mandatory vaccinations. "I don't know, and we can ask the Department of Defense. There is no reason provided!" Maybe soldiers going into combat may need certain kinds of immunity?
The flu vaccine is contaminated. "There is another concern in regards to vaccinations," says Taitz, "and vaccination against the swine flu." She starts to tell me about contaminated vaccines in the Czech Republic.
It's too bad the interviewer didn't ask her about homeopathy, cold fusion, 9/11, Creationism, Flat-Earth theory, or astrology.

Oh. My. God.
Warning: If you are at work and will get funny looks if you laugh out loud, don't play this video.
I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like that. I admit that I am sometimes frustrated by journalists not giving guests a chance to speak or to make a nuanced explanation, but this was insane. They kept giving her more time, and she kept rambling on about anything except the question that was asked, in that absurd high-pitched voice of hers.
Speaking of the voice, I'm trying really hard to restrain myself from further ad hominem attacks, but man, they would be so easy. Her bad makeup, her bewildering hair, the way she kept saying, "Okay, okay" when she tried to think of what to say... I mean, you shouldn't judge people by such superficial things, but I do think the fact that she went on national TV looking like that probably does say something about her level of sanity...
My favorite part is the folks in the studio laughing in the background. But how could you not laugh?
